New ‘Changing Places’ Bathroom

Details
Category: News
Published: Wednesday, 09 January 2019 22:07

Great news for parents and pupils - Another Changing Places facility has been opened in Northern Ireland! The business which went the extra mile to make its premises fully accessible is the multinational group IKEA.

It comes after Victoria Square and Castle Court shopping centres also installed the facilities which provide more space than a standard disabled toilet and offers room for a wheelchair user and two carers, with a height-adjustable bed and a hoist.

Work doesn’t stop just because the sun isn’t shining!

The Eco Team have been very busy doing a big Autumn tidy up around the school grounds. Plant pots have been cleared of leaf litter, new fruit shrubs have been placed into our fruit and vegetable planters and lots of bulbs have planted in pots with the prospect of colourful flowers due to make an appearance at Spring time. We haven’t forgotten our wildlife and the Eco Team have been making bird food to feed the hungry birds during the Winter season.

The Eco Team paid Mrs Lavery a visit to discuss the school’s huge consumption of paper and ink and the costs involved. To help reduce our paper usage, it has been decided to go ‘paper free’ with our newsletter.

From January 2019, the newsletter will no longer be printed. Instead it will be available to read on our school website and text alerts and Facebook posts will let everyone know when the latest update is available to read.

Eco Award Winners

Details
Category: News
Published: Sunday, 16 December 2018 15:57

Donard School Eco Team attended an award ceremony on Friday 23rd November for ‘Grassroots Challenge’ organised by Ulster Wildlife. The Eco Team were shortlisted for their great work including making new planters from scratch, growing plants from seed and creating a BBC School Report about the Grassroots Challenge.

Congratulations to Simon who won an ‘Eco Leader Award’ for his contributions to nature. In the Grassroots Challenge, He learned about local garden birds and how to make a bird box. He enjoyed the task so much that he decided to make a bird box for his own garden. A blue tit family soon made it their home and raised a family inside. The ‘Eco Leader’ took photos as a record of the chicks growing right until the moment when they fledged from the nest. He shared his photos and findings with the other members of the Eco Team. This young man has been an enthusiastic member of the Eco Team and an inspiration to others. The photo was taken at the award ceremony. Well done to the Eco Team and good luck as we start our new ventures this year.
