The siblings all enjoyed their night snow tubing. Everyone was going so fast that the photos don’t show all the fun that was had. Here’s a few photos of our visit. See you all in January 2019.

Work doesn’t stop just because the sun isn’t shining!

The Eco Team have been very busy doing a big Autumn tidy up around the school grounds. Plant pots have been cleared of leaf litter, new fruit shrubs have been placed into our fruit and vegetable planters and lots of bulbs have planted in pots with the prospect of colourful flowers due to make an appearance at Spring time. We haven’t forgotten our wildlife and the Eco Team have been making bird food to feed the hungry birds during the Winter season.

The Eco Team paid Mrs Lavery a visit to discuss the school’s huge consumption of paper and ink and the costs involved. To help reduce our paper usage, it has been decided to go ‘paper free’ with our newsletter.

From January 2019, the newsletter will no longer be printed. Instead it will be available to read on our school website and text alerts and Facebook posts will let everyone know when the latest update is available to read.

Eco Award Winners

Donard School Eco Team attended an award ceremony on Friday 23rd November for ‘Grassroots Challenge’ organised by Ulster Wildlife. The Eco Team were shortlisted for their great work including making new planters from scratch, growing plants from seed and creating a BBC School Report about the Grassroots Challenge.

Congratulations to Simon who won an ‘Eco Leader Award’ for his contributions to nature. In the Grassroots Challenge, He learned about local garden birds and how to make a bird box. He enjoyed the task so much that he decided to make a bird box for his own garden. A blue tit family soon made it their home and raised a family inside. The ‘Eco Leader’ took photos as a record of the chicks growing right until the moment when they fledged from the nest. He shared his photos and findings with the other members of the Eco Team. This young man has been an enthusiastic member of the Eco Team and an inspiration to others. The photo was taken at the award ceremony. Well done to the Eco Team and good luck as we start our new ventures this year.

Ice Hockey

Pupils from our Senior School attended the annual Friendship Four Ice Hockey Tournament. We watched Union College and Yale University, showing our support for Yale. Union College scored after just 6 minutes and it was a long wait before we could celebrate a goal from Yale - but it was worth the wait.

We look forward to attending next year's game - it really is a great night's entertainment and a highlight for our Senior pupils.

Some pupils from Class 1, Class 7 and Class 10 enjoyed an excellent multi-sensory morning on Tuesday 27th November when Replay Theatre came to School to put on a special performance called 'Closer'. The show told the story of a trip into outer space with the pupils joining in as the 'Earthlings'. If you look closely at the photographs you will see that the story started in the classroom and was then performed in a specially constructed dome. To add to the theme all the pupils travelled to outer space in their own rocket! It was amazing to see how engaged and interested the pupils were and we really appreciate the work put into involving every single pupil by the amazing cast. The pupils enjoyed lights, music, singing, movement, sounds and lots more. We hope that this will be the start of many more visits from Replay Theatre to our School.
